COVID-19 Omicron Variant: With the rise and spread of the COVID-19 omicron variant, scientists are urging individuals to receive COVID-19 vaccine boosters. The omicron variant has not yet spread across the U.S., but the CDC is preparing to be able to identify the variant when it does inevitably spread.

COVID-19 and Malaria: New findings from research conducted in Uganda and Mali suggests that malaria exposure and COVID-19 infection and severity may be correlated. Research suggests that patients who were previously exposed to malaria were protected against severe symptoms of COVID-19 due to a lower level of cytokines (proteins involved in a COVID-19 response).

COVID-19 and Pregnancy: As part of the National Institute of Health’s Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery Initiative, the NIH will be collaborating on a 4 year research study to determine the long term effects of COVID-19 on women infected with the virus during pregnancy and their children.

Sickle Cell Disease Research News Updates

A Closer Look at SCD: In a recent oped article published by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Audrey Boone Tillman, the first Black American and female General Counsel at Aflac Inc, writes about the importance and need for sickle cell awareness. She argues that now is the time to focus on sickle cell disease and improve the lives of 100,00 adults and children.

Oxbryta and SCD: Global Blood Therapeutics will be presenting 3 years of data from a Phase 3 clinical trial for the treatment Oxbryta (voxelotor) at the 2021 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting & Exposition later this month. Oxbryta has been shown to effectively reduce anemia and red blood cell destruction.

Lupus Research News Updates

Lupus and SELF: Lupus Foundation of America recently presented their results on a lupus self management program called Strategies to Embrace Living with Lupus Fearlessly, or SELF. SELF is an online program that helps patients manage lupus through 4 key behaviors: managing symptoms, stress, medications, and working with their health care team.

Lupus and the Gut: New research shows that having a healthy gut and healthy gut bacteria may reduce lupus disease activity. In research participants with lupus and lupus related-APS, those with a diet higher in resistant starch (such as oats, barley, lentils, peas, etc.) showed higher levels of good bacteria and lower levels of bad bacteria. Good gut bacteria have been linked to lower levels of disease activity.
