Researchers at Gilead Sciences examined the impact of time from collection to processing on the integrity of PBMCs. They found that delaying processing more than 24 hours post collection can have effects on quality and performance in functional assays. Their results strongly suggest designing a protocol for sample collection that can reduce time from collection to the lab as much as feasible.
