COVID-19 Breakthrough Cases: A new study conducted at the Yale New Haven Health System examined breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in patients that were fully vaccinated. Researchers found that fully vaccinated individuals who contracted COVID-19 and were hospitalized tended to be of older age (between 65 to 95 years) and suffered from preexisting conditions such as Type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
COVID-19 Vaccine for Autoimmune Patients: A Phase 2 clinical trial, sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), will assess whether a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will elicit an antibody response in patients of autoimmune disease who did not respond to the original 2 doses of the vaccine. The trail will also examine whether pausing immunosuppressive therapy will allow for a stronger response to the COVID-19 vaccine in these patients.
New mRNA HIV Vaccine: Moderna is launching a Phase 1 clinical trial of an experimental mRNA vaccine to protect against HIV. Moderna, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) are involved in the development of the vaccine. This vaccine will utilize a similar mechanism as the highly effective COVID-19 vaccines developed by Moderna and Pfizer.

Hydroxyurea and Cardiac Complications: Patients with sickle cell anemia often struggle with cardiac complications and heart abnormalities. A new study, published in Blood Advances, finds that hydroxyurea may improve or even reverse cardiac complications associated with sickle cell disease.

$6 Million for Lupus Research: Lupus Research Alliance granted $6 million as part of the Global Science Award to two teams of internationally renowned lupus researchers. This award will fund personalized treatment approaches for lupus.
Sex Bias in Lupus: Certain diseases have varying prevalence in males and females. One such example is lupus which predominantly affects women. According to new research, “sex differences may have a genetic basis that is attributable to the sex chromosomes.” Sex-biased diseases may be attributable to genes involved in X chromosome inactivation.
