What Is Human Plasma?

Human plasma is the liquid component of blood that remains when the cellular components (red cells, white cells, and platelets) are removed. It makes up roughly 55% of blood volume and carries proteins, clotting factors, electrolytes, hormones, and metabolites. Anticoagulant choice is not interchangeable — EDTA chelates calcium and will invalidate most clotting assays, while heparin interferes with some PCR chemistries — so specify it up front.
