Hashimoto’s Disease Plasma for Autoimmune Thyroid Research
Hashimoto’s Disease Plasma is collected from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and processed within one day of collection to preserve labile analytes such as cytokines, proteins, and metabolites. Anticoagulant type and aliquot volume are configured per project and reported per lot. This plasma supports research into autoimmune thyroid destruction, the systemic consequences of thyroid hormone deficiency, and biomarker discovery across the natural history of the disease. Why Plasma for Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Research
Hashimoto’s disease is a genuine autoimmune disorder: the immune system mounts a sustained response against thyroid tissue, producing lymphocytic infiltration of the gland and progressive loss of functioning thyrocytes. It is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient populations. Circulating specimens are the practical window onto this process, because the thyroid itself is rarely biopsied in research settings.
- Autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin are the defining serological markers of Hashimoto’s disease, and their presence and titre are how donors are stratified into biologically meaningful groups.
- Thyroid autoimmunity progresses through recognisable stages — autoantibody-positive euthyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism with a raised TSH and preserved free T4, and overt hypothyroidism — so plasma from donors at different stages supports research into what drives progression.
- Plasma is collected without a clotting step, which preserves coagulation-sensitive analytes and makes it the preferred matrix for many cytokine, proteomic, and metabolomic platforms; classical thyroid autoantibody and thyroid function serology is conventionally run on serum, and both matrices can be supplied from the same donor.
- Thyroid hormone deficiency has broad metabolic consequences, including effects on lipid handling, which makes plasma from untreated and treated donors useful for metabolic and cardiovascular biomarker work.
- Hashimoto’s disease clusters with other autoimmune conditions such as celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, vitiligo, and pernicious anaemia, so these cohorts support research into shared autoimmune mechanisms and polyautoimmunity.
- Levothyroxine replacement normalises hormone levels without removing the underlying autoimmunity, allowing the immunological and the endocrine components of the disease to be separated in a treated cohort.
