Hypothyroidism Plasma is collected from donors clinically diagnosed with hypothyroidism and processed within hours of collection to preserve key analytes such as hormones, autoantibodies, proteins, and metabolites. This human plasma supports thyroid function assay development, autoantibody research, and biomarker discovery in thyroid disease.
Identify the Cause, Not Just the Deficiency
Hypothyroidism describes insufficient thyroid hormone action, but the underlying cause changes what a sample can tell you:
- Autoimmune (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) — by far the most common cause in iodine-sufficient populations, characterised by anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) autoantibodies. For a dedicated cohort see Hashimoto’s disease plasma.
- Post-ablative or post-surgical — following radioiodine or thyroidectomy; typically autoantibody-negative
- Drug-induced — including amiodarone and lithium
- Central (secondary) — pituitary or hypothalamic in origin, with low TSH rather than high
Severity also matters: subclinical hypothyroidism (raised TSH with normal free T4) and overt hypothyroidism behave differently in biomarker studies, as does treatment status — most donors on levothyroxine are biochemically euthyroid at the time of draw, which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you must exclude.
