Behcet’s Disease Plasma for Variable-Vessel Vasculitis Research
Behcet’s Disease Plasma is collected from IRB-consented donors with a clinically confirmed diagnosis of Behcet’s disease and processed within one day of collection to preserve cytokines, proteins and metabolites. Plasma is an acellular matrix, so these samples are intended for analyte-level work such as inflammatory mediator profiling, proteomics and metabolomics.
Immune Mechanisms in Behcet’s Disease
Behcet’s disease is a chronic, relapsing variable-vessel vasculitis that can involve arteries and veins of any calibre. Its classification is genuinely debated: the disease is best described as immune-mediated and autoinflammatory-leaning, with prominent innate immune hyperactivity alongside adaptive skewing. No disease-defining autoantibody has been established, so plasma utility rests on inflammatory mediator, proteomic and metabolomic readouts rather than serology.
- Behcet’s disease carries a strong and repeatedly replicated genetic association with HLA-B51; additional susceptibility signals in IL23R/IL12RB2 and ERAP1 tie the disease to the IL-23/IL-17 axis.
- Neutrophil hyperactivity is a hallmark — enhanced chemotaxis, reactive oxygen species generation and infiltration of mucocutaneous and vascular lesions, with corresponding neutrophil-derived mediators measurable in circulation.
- T cell responses are skewed towards Th1 and Th17 phenotypes, and the associated cytokine milieu is accessible to multiplex plasma assays.
- Acute-phase reactants and inflammatory mediators fluctuate markedly between flare and remission, which makes plasma well suited to activity-state and longitudinal designs.
- Thrombosis in Behcet’s disease is driven principally by vascular wall inflammation rather than classical hypercoagulability, making endothelial activation and coagulation-pathway analytes of specific interest in plasma.
