Our Pancreatic Cancer Serum is sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Each sample is processed and frozen within 24 hours of collection to ensure consistency and high quality. Pancreatic cancer — most commonly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma — is a malignancy characterised by early local invasion, a dense desmoplastic stroma and a profoundly immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment. Late presentation makes circulating biomarkers a central research priority, and this serum supports tumour biomarker discovery, early detection research and therapeutic development.
Tumour Biology, Circulating Markers and Why Serum
- Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is driven by a well-characterised sequence of genetic events, with KRAS activating mutations in the large majority of tumours alongside loss of CDKN2A, TP53 and SMAD4.
- CA19-9 remains the principal clinically used serum tumour marker in pancreatic cancer, used for monitoring and prognostication rather than screening — making characterised patient serum essential for improving on it.
- The tumour stroma is dense and fibrotic, and stromal remodelling releases matrix-derived and protease-related analytes that are detectable systemically.
- The tumour microenvironment is strongly immunosuppressive, with myeloid-derived suppressor and regulatory populations predominating; soluble immune mediators in serum reflect this systemic immune skewing.
- Cancer cachexia and systemic metabolic disruption are common in pancreatic cancer and produce measurable changes in circulating metabolites, acute-phase proteins and inflammatory mediators.
- Serum is acellular. It suits tumour marker immunoassay, proteomic, glycoproteomic and metabolomic discovery and autoantibody panel work, but not flow cytometry or other cell-based assays.
