Healthy Pediatrics Plasma for Reference Range and Developmental Biology Research

Healthy Pediatrics Plasma is collected from healthy pediatric donors under IRB-approved protocols, with parental or guardian permission and age-appropriate assent where applicable. These are healthy volunteers, not patients, and no disease diagnosis is associated with this product. Samples are processed within one day of collection to preserve labile analytes such as cytokines, proteins, lipids, and metabolites, then aliquoted and cryopreserved. Research Use Only (RUO).

Pediatric Reference Biology and Why It Matters

  • Children are not small adults at the analyte level. The immune system matures progressively through infancy and childhood, including a shift in the balance of naive and memory lymphocyte populations and maturation of immunoglobulin isotype levels as maternally derived antibody declines and endogenous production rises.
  • Many plasma proteins follow developmental trajectories. Growth-associated analytes such as alkaline phosphatase vary substantially with skeletal growth and puberty, and hemostatic protein levels differ in neonates and infants relative to older children.
  • Lipid and lipoprotein profiles change across childhood and shift again through puberty, and endocrine analytes change markedly with pubertal stage. Sex differences emerge and widen through adolescence.
  • For these reasons, clinical and research reference intervals for pediatric specimens must be partitioned by age band and often by sex. Applying an adult range to a pediatric sample can misclassify a normal value as abnormal.
  • The practical constraint is supply. Healthy pediatric blood is difficult to source: collection volumes are limited, consent requires parental or guardian permission alongside child assent, and healthy children are rarely phlebotomized outside a research protocol. Ethically consented, well-annotated healthy pediatric plasma is the scarce input, and that is the value of this product.
  • Plasma is acellular and is appropriate for soluble protein, cytokine, lipid, and metabolite measurement rather than any cell-based assay.
