Parkinson’s Disease Plasma for Neurodegeneration Biomarker Research

Parkinson’s Disease Plasma is collected from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and processed within one day of collection to preserve labile analytes such as neuronal proteins, cytokines, lipids, and metabolites. Cryopreserved and available in custom aliquots, with standardized pre-analytical handling. Research Use Only (RUO).

Neurodegeneration and Why Plasma

  • Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder defined by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and by Lewy pathology composed of aggregated alpha-synuclein.
  • Alpha-synuclein aggregation is the central molecular event and the target of multiple therapeutic programs, so quantifying and characterizing circulating alpha-synuclein species is an active area of blood-based biomarker research.
  • Blood alpha-synuclein measurement requires careful pre-analytical control because erythrocytes contain abundant alpha-synuclein and hemolysis confounds results. Our standardized processing is designed to support this kind of work.
  • Neurofilament light chain is an established plasma marker of neuroaxonal injury and is widely used in parkinsonian research, including in studies distinguishing Parkinson’s disease from atypical parkinsonian syndromes.
  • Genetic risk is dominated by variants in GBA1 and LRRK2; these define enrichment cohorts for targeted therapeutics and are accompanied by measurable changes in relevant lipid and metabolic analytes.
  • Plasma is acellular. This product is for soluble protein, extracellular vesicle, lipidomic, and metabolomic analysis, and does not support flow cytometry, immunophenotyping, or any other cell-based assay.

  • Disease duration since diagnosis and Hoehn and Yahr stage where documented
  • Motor phenotype: tremor-dominant versus postural instability and gait difficulty
  • Presence of cognitive impairment or Parkinson’s disease dementia
  • Genotype where documented: GBA1 or LRRK2 variant carriers
  • Treatment status: levodopa, dopamine agonist, MAO-B inhibitor, deep brain stimulation, or treatment-naive
  • Age at onset, including early-onset donors, plus sex and self-reported race/ethnicity
  • Matched healthy controls available, age- and sex-matched on request
