About Asthma Serum
Asthma Serum for Type 2 Airway Inflammation Research
Our Asthma Serum is sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with asthma, with each sample processed and frozen within 24 hours of collection. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterised by variable airflow obstruction and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. In most patients the underlying immunology is type 2 — allergic sensitisation driving IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 signalling, eosinophilia and IgE production — rather than autoimmune. Serum is the standard matrix for the analytes that define that endotype.
Why Serum for Asthma
Asthma is no longer treated as one disease. Endotyping — separating type 2-high from type 2-low inflammation — now determines which biologic a patient receives, and the measurements that drive that decision are largely serum measurements.
- Total and allergen-specific IgE — serum is the standard matrix for both. Total IgE guides anti-IgE therapy dosing eligibility, and allergen-specific IgE defines the sensitisation profile underlying allergic asthma.
- The type 2 cytokine axis — IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 are the validated drug targets in severe eosinophilic and allergic asthma, addressed by anti-IL-5, anti-IL-5 receptor and anti-IL-4 receptor alpha biologics. Serum supports research into circulating correlates of those pathways.
- Epithelial alarmin biology — TSLP is an upstream epithelial-derived driver of both type 2 and non-type 2 inflammation and is now a validated therapeutic target, making upstream airway-epithelial biology an active serum research area.
- Eosinophil-derived proteins — eosinophil cationic protein and related granule proteins reflect eosinophil activation rather than simply eosinophil count.
- Type 2-low endotypes matter too — a substantial minority of asthma is neutrophilic or paucigranulocytic and responds poorly to type 2-targeted biologics. Well-annotated serum lets these endotypes be studied as distinct populations rather than as treatment failures.
- Serum for serology, plasma for coagulation-sensitive work — use serum for IgE and protein immunoassays; the plasma sibling is appropriate for coagulation-sensitive analytes, cell-free nucleic acids and untargeted metabolomics.

- Blood eosinophil count and total IgE where recorded, to support type 2-high versus type 2-low endotype selection
- Allergic/atopic versus non-atopic asthma, with allergen sensitisation profile where available
- Treatment status: inhaled corticosteroid with or without long-acting bronchodilator, oral corticosteroid dependence, or biologic therapy (anti-IgE, anti-IL-5 pathway, anti-IL-4R, anti-TSLP)
- Comorbid atopic conditions: allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, atopic dermatitis
- Smoking status and age of onset (childhood versus adult onset)
- Matched healthy controls available, age- and sex-matched on request
