Our Multiple Myeloma Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells is a hematopoietic tissue sample isolated by density-gradient separation from bone marrow aspirate, capturing the full spectrum of marrow-resident hematopoietic stem, progenitor, and precursor cells that peripheral blood samples do not contain. Samples are sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a malignancy of clonal plasma cells that reside and expand within the bone marrow.
Multiple Myeloma Biology and Why Bone Marrow
- Multiple myeloma diagnosis requires demonstration of clonal plasma cell infiltration of the bone marrow at 10% or greater (or a biopsy-proven plasmacytoma), making marrow aspirate the required diagnostic specimen.
- Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) cytogenetics performed on marrow-derived plasma cells – detecting abnormalities such as t(4;14), t(14;16), and del(17p) – is the standard approach to risk stratification.
- The marrow microenvironment, including bone marrow stromal cells, osteoclasts, and immune cells, actively supports myeloma cell survival and drives the characteristic bone disease, making marrow material essential for microenvironment-focused research.
- Minimal residual disease assessment by next-generation flow cytometry or sequencing on marrow aspirate is increasingly used to guide treatment duration and predict outcomes.
