Myasthenia Gravis Whole Blood for Neuroimmunology Research
Myasthenia Gravis Whole Blood is collected from IRB-consented donors with a clinically confirmed myasthenia gravis diagnosis, then shipped same day to preserve cellular and plasma analytes. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction in which autoantibodies interfere with postsynaptic signalling, producing fluctuating, fatigable muscle weakness. These fresh samples support neuroimmunology, autoantibody and therapeutic response research.
Neuromuscular Junction Autoimmunity and Why Whole Blood
- Most patients have IgG autoantibodies against the postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR). These antibodies impair neuromuscular transmission through receptor blockade, cross-linking and internalisation, and complement-mediated damage to the postsynaptic membrane.
- A distinct minority of patients instead carry antibodies to muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) or to LRP4; these subgroups differ clinically and in treatment response, so autoantibody status is a primary stratification variable.
- Complement activation at the endplate is a validated therapeutic target, and complement inhibitors are now part of the treatment landscape — making intact complement-containing samples valuable for mechanistic work.
- Thymic pathology, including thymic hyperplasia and thymoma, is associated with AChR-antibody positive disease and links the condition to abnormal central tolerance.
- Whole blood retains both the cellular compartment and the antibody- and complement-containing plasma fraction in native proportions, allowing paired serological and cellular analysis from a single draw.
- Because whole blood is cellular, it supports immunophenotyping, B cell and plasmablast characterisation, and RNA-based profiling in addition to autoantibody quantification.
