Human Myositis Serum for Autoimmune Myopathy and Autoantibody Research
Our Myositis Serum is sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy. Each sample is processed and frozen within 24 hours of collection to preserve myositis-specific autoantibodies, muscle enzymes, and inflammatory proteins for autoimmune stratification research.
Why Serum for Myositis Research
The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are systemic autoimmune diseases, and myositis is unusual in that serology does more than confirm the diagnosis — the autoantibody largely defines the clinical subset. Serum, collected without anticoagulant, is the reference matrix for both the autoantibody profile and the muscle-injury enzymes.
- Myositis-specific autoantibodies define clinical phenotypes — they are mutually exclusive in most donors and map onto distinct organ-involvement patterns, treatment responses, and outcomes, making serotype the most useful stratification variable in the disease
- Dermatomyositis-associated specificities — anti-Mi-2, anti-TIF1γ, anti-NXP2, anti-SAE, and anti-MDA5, the last strongly associated with rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease and often with minimal muscle involvement
- Antisynthetase syndrome — anti-Jo-1 and the non-Jo-1 antisynthetase antibodies define a syndrome combining myositis, interstitial lung disease, and arthritis rather than isolated muscle disease
- Immune-mediated necrotising myopathy — anti-HMGCR, including statin-associated cases, and anti-SRP identify a subset with high creatine kinase and prominent necrosis on biopsy
- Inclusion body myositis — anti-cN1A reactivity is associated with this subtype, which differs mechanistically from the other myopathies and is important to separate in cohort design
- Muscle enzymes and inflammatory proteins in the same sample — creatine kinase and aldolase track muscle injury, while myositis-associated antibodies such as anti-Ro52 and cytokine profiles including a type I interferon signature in dermatomyositis add mechanistic depth
