- Alopecia areata is a T-cell-mediated autoimmune disease in which cytotoxic CD8+ NKG2D+ T cells collapse the hair follicle’s immune privilege, triggering an interferon-gamma-driven inflammatory cascade.
- The IFN-gamma / JAK-STAT signaling axis drives disease activity, making JAK inhibitors a primary therapeutic class; serum interferon-induced chemokines (CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL11) are widely used activity biomarkers.
- Patients frequently show circulating autoantibodies and altered Th1/Th17 cytokine balance detectable in serum.
