Hidradenitis Suppurativa Serum for Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Disease Research
Our Hidradenitis Suppurativa Serum is sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Each sample is processed and frozen within 24 hours of collection to preserve cytokines, acute-phase proteins and other labile analytes. HS is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease of the hair follicle and adjacent apocrine gland-bearing skin, in which follicular occlusion and rupture trigger a deep, destructive inflammatory response producing painful nodules, abscesses, draining tunnels and scarring.
Follicular Occlusion, Innate Inflammation and Why Serum
- The initiating event is follicular occlusion and rupture, which releases follicular contents into the dermis and provokes an intense neutrophil- and macrophage-rich inflammatory response. HS is immune-mediated and inflammatory, not autoimmune.
- Lesional and circulating cytokine profiles implicate TNF-alpha, IL-17 and IL-1 family signalling, which is the rationale for the TNF and IL-17 pathway biologics now used in HS.
- HS carries a substantial systemic inflammatory burden, with elevated acute-phase reactants including CRP frequently observed and correlating with disease severity. Serum is a standard matrix for CRP and routine inflammatory chemistry.
- Secondary bacterial colonisation and biofilm formation within tunnels contribute to the inflammatory cycle without HS being a primary infectious disease.
- HS is strongly associated with metabolic comorbidity, including obesity and metabolic syndrome, and with other immune-mediated conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease — making serum a useful matrix for studying shared systemic inflammation.
- Serum is acellular. It supports cytokine and acute-phase protein immunoassay, proteomic and metabolomic profiling, but not flow cytometry or other cell-based assays.
