Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV CD56+ NK Cells

HIV CD56+ NK Cells for Viral Immune Surveillance Research

HIV CD56+ NK Cells are cryopreserved from peripheral blood of IRB-consented adult donors diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). These CD56+ CD3− natural killer cells reflect the innate immune alterations of chronic HIV infection and support studies of immune surveillance, cytotoxicity, and antibody-dependent effector function.

NK Cells in HIV Infection

NK cells sit at the front line of innate antiviral defence, and HIV reshapes the compartment in specific, well-characterised ways:

  • Expansion of an anergic CD56-negative subset — a dysfunctional population that accumulates in viremic donors and only partially resolves on therapy
  • Impaired cytotoxicity and reduced degranulation, with altered activating and inhibitory receptor balance
  • ADCC (antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity) — an effector mechanism strongly implicated as a correlate of protection in HIV vaccine trials, making donor NK cells directly relevant to vaccine research
  • KIR/HLA interactions — specific combinations such as KIR3DS1 with HLA-Bw4 associate with slower disease progression, so genotype-stratified NK cells support host-genetics work
  • Adaptive or memory-like NK expansion, particularly in CMV-coinfected donors

Donor Stratification Available

  • Viral load and CD4+ count where tested
  • Treatment status — viremic, or suppressed on ART with duration
  • KIR and HLA genotype where sequenced
  • CMV serostatus — relevant to adaptive NK subset frequency
  • Elite controllers — available as custom collections
  • Matched seronegative controls available
