LeukoCore Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Leukopak biospecimens are collected from donors clinically diagnosed with HIV through IRB-approved apheresis procedures. Each leukopak contains large quantities of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), making it ideal for immune profiling, cytokine analysis, and drug development research related to HIV.
Why Apheresis Volume Matters for HIV Reservoir Work
The latent HIV reservoir is vanishingly rare — typically on the order of one infected cell per million resting CD4+ T cells in donors on suppressive therapy. Assays that quantify it, including quantitative viral outgrowth and intact proviral DNA assays, therefore need very large cell inputs to return a reliable measurement. A standard blood draw usually cannot supply enough. A leukopak can, which is why apheresis material is effectively a prerequisite for reservoir and cure research rather than a convenience.
