Human Rheumatoid Arthritis Serum for Autoimmune and Autoantibody Research

Our Rheumatoid Arthritis Serum is sourced from IRB-consented donors clinically diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Each sample is processed and frozen within 24 hours of collection to ensure consistency and high quality for autoantibody, proteomic and biomarker discovery studies. Rheumatoid arthritis is a genuinely autoimmune disease: tolerance to citrullinated self-proteins is lost, autoantibodies are produced, and the resulting synovial inflammation erodes cartilage and bone.

Why Serum for Rheumatoid Arthritis Research

  • The two autoantibodies that define RA serologically — anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA, commonly measured as anti-CCP) and rheumatoid factor — are serum analytes and form part of the ACR/EULAR classification criteria. Serum is therefore the matrix in which RA is serologically defined.
  • Autoantibody testing requires an anticoagulant-free matrix; citrate and EDTA carryover interferes with several immunoassay formats used for ACPA and rheumatoid factor quantification.
  • ACPA can precede clinical arthritis by years, and its presence marks a more erosive disease course. Serum from serology-defined subgroups supports research on the seropositive versus seronegative divide, which is increasingly treated as two distinct disease entities.
  • Anti-carbamylated protein antibodies and other anti-modified protein antibody families have been described in RA and broaden the autoantibody landscape available for interrogation in serum.
  • CRP is embedded in the DAS28-CRP composite disease activity score, and IL-6 — the cytokine driving hepatic CRP production — is the direct target of IL-6 receptor blockade. Serum ties a validated clinical activity metric to a druggable pathway.
  • Serum from RA donors can be paired with synovial fluid from the same disease to compare systemic autoantibody and cytokine levels against the inflamed joint compartment where the pathology sits.

Donor Stratification Available

  • Serology: ACPA-positive, rheumatoid factor-positive, dual-positive, or seronegative RA; titres reported per lot where tested
  • Disease activity by DAS28 or CDAI where recorded
  • Treatment status: biologic-naive, on methotrexate or other conventional synthetic DMARD, on TNF inhibitor, on IL-6 receptor inhibitor, on JAK inhibitor, on rituximab or abatacept, or in washout
  • Disease duration: early versus established RA
  • Erosive versus non-erosive disease where radiographic status is reported
  • Extra-articular involvement and comorbidity, including interstitial lung disease and secondary Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Matched healthy controls available

Are samples IRB approved?

1 Answer

YES – All collections are conducted under IRB-approved protocols and electronic informed consent. Sanguine utilizes Advarra and WCG IRB for oversight.

YES – all our products are research use only (RUO).

Storage depends on sample type but often cryopreserved samples stored in liquid nitrogen can be stored for years.

Extensive customization is available. To discuss your project request a quote or email us at learnmore@sanguinebio.com.

Sanguine offers flexible prospective collection services tailored to fit your research. For more information and to request a quote, please see: our prospective biospecimen collection services page.

Timelines depend on condition, sample type, and I/E criteria but we often start collection within 2 weeks of signed agreement.

YES – we have in-stock inventory. You can also email us at learnmore@sanguinebio.com as we continually get new samples in our inventory.

Each sample from a different individual – Unique donor means each sample comes from a different person, ensuring biological diversity in your study.

YES – Unique donors can be specified and guaranteed based on your requirements.

For information about sample quality, please see: Quality and Compliance

YES – “IRB-approved collection protocols” and IRB approval documentation available upon request. Sanguine utilizes two internationally-recognized IRBs (Advarra and WCG IRB) for review and approval.
